He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruben Carter, Sr. and Anna Slaughter; his wife Doris Jean Johnson; his former wife Henryetta Carter; his daughter Sharon Carter Jackson; and his grandchildren, Tyisha and Monique Virgil.
He is survived by: his son Alton D. Carter, Jr. (Sonja) of Orlando, Florida; his sister Elizabeth Sherman (Rufus) of Leesburg, Georgia; his grandchildren, Antwon Carter (Laura) of Apopka, Bonika Virgil of Orlando, Antonio Carter Sr. of Orlando and Nariah Davis (Eric) of Jacksonville, Florida; and his godchildren, Terry Watkins, Sr. (Gloria) of Apopka, Marcus Bryant of Orlando, Nivon Holland of Okahumpka, Lisa McClain of Winter Park, Winnie Manning (Al) of Winter Park, Inkeria Putnam of Orlando and Sharon. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.
