He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, William Frederick Mertens and Estelle Ruby Wright Mertens; his wife Dorothy Mertens; his children, Eric Mertens (Lisa), Joshua Mertens, Robert Mertens, Daryl Mertens (Phyllis), Brenda Stephenson (Don) and Scott Mertens; and his grandson Craig Mertens. He was also cherished by six grandchildren.
