Michele left this world on July 17, 2024 at the age of 65, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. She was predeceased by: her parents, Donald J. La Forge and Joyce McFarland La Forge; and the father of her children Stephen W. Leonhard (Shamu). She is survived by: her husband Keith Buchner; her children, Matt Leonhard (Jen Geoghean), Sean Leonhard (Luellen Leonhard) and Lia Buchner (Chris Walter); her siblings, Thomas P. La Forge (Bub), Donna Orr (Jodi), Denise Anderson and Donald J. La Forge (DJ); and her grandchildren, Caleb Seth West, Hailina Walter and Laquala Buchner (LB).

One of her physicians described her as a trailblazer, for her contributions to the continued fight to find the cure for AML. Shelly's clinical trial "trailblazer" successes, along with her son Sean's bone marrow donation, will forever be part and parcel that will continue to tribute to the longevity of patients in the future; as the experimental drugs and therapy used will become available someday to hopefully cure/irradicate AML as we know it.
