He was predeceased by: his parents, Lois DeMent and Edward DeMent; and his nephew J. E. Gause. He is survived by: his wife Kim DeMent; his children, Bryan Bentley, Michael White and Michelle Johnston; his siblings, Len DeMent (Lynne), Larry DeMent (Yolanda) and Linda Gause (John); his grandchildren, Avah Bentley, James "Cuatro" Jordan, Connor Johnston, Adaline Johnston and Lorelei Nelson; and his godchildren, Valor Daye and Owen Daye. He is also survived by five nephews; three nieces; six great-nephews; seven great-nieces.
