He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur R Tavis and Geraldine Penwarden Tavis; his siblings, Joseph, Nancy Larson and Marty Boise; and his son Tim Tavis.
He is survived by: his wife Sparky McKee of Mandan; his children, Thomas Tavis, Therese Beckwith (Paul) and Tami Lange (Tom); his daughter-in-law Jane Gilbert; his grandchildren, Brian Lange, Kevin Lange, Lauren Lange Smith, Meriwether, Tasman Beckwith, Carlos and Crystal Trevino-Tavis; and his great grandchildren, Thomas, Francesca, Nico Lange, Lana, Lee Tavis Lange, Olivia Sparky Smith, Easton Tavis, Austyn Trevino-Tavis, Dazejah Claiborne, DaMari Claiborne and Devine Claiborne.
In 1964, upon receipt of a Ford Foundation Grant, Lee, Sparky and their four children relocated to Bloomington, Indiana.
