He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter William Thorns and Helen Lenore Matthews (Dorothy A. Thorns); his son James F. Thorns; and his brothers, Harry T. Thorns and Robert C. Thorns.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy May; his children, Cathy Susan Stam (Kenneth), Sarah Ann Conroy (Charles), William John Thorns (Tracy) and Daniel Joseph Thorns (Michele); and his daughter-in-law Sonya Thorns. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
