Evelyn (Sanchez) Damiano Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn (Sanchez) Damiano, who left us on November 7, 2024, at the age of 82. It was exactly nine years and twenty two minutes after her late husband's death. She was born on January 18th in the Bronx, New York to Fernando and Venera Sanchez, immigrants from Puerto Rico.
Evelyn was known for her dedication to family, strong friendships and incredible work ethic. She came from a close knit Hispanic family in the projects of the Bronx and looked on her childhood with very fond memories. After marrying her husband James "Jay" Damiano Sr, they took a chance and moved their family across the country to St. Augustine, FL. Even though their entire families, on both sides, resided in New York, Evelyn and her family thrived in their newfound seaside home and built a wonderful life here. She was always involved with the community, her neighborhood, school events, and her job.
She made many friends and contacts at the St. Johns County Courthouse where she worked as a juvenile clerk for more than 20 years. Evelyn and Jay eventually retired to the Villages for a few years until Jay passed away in 2015. Evelyn then returned to the place where her happiest memories were made, and settled in Vilano Beach.
Evelyn loved the community of St. Augustine and was grateful to spend her last few years in her condo in Vilano. She decided in her mid 70’s to be a “beach bum” and made many wonderful new friends and memories there, while enjoying the smell of the salty sea air. She was so grateful to find such happiness during her golden years. Evelyn will be remembered for fierce devotion to her husband, children, great grandchildren, friends, and neighbors.
She is survived by her son James Damiano Jr. and his wife Donna Damiano, Jennifer Damiano Bishop and her husband Rennie Bishop, Janeen Damiano Sara and her husband Matthew Sara, her grandchildren Marissa, Elycia, Kaitlin, Zachary, Luke, Lily, Hannah, Victoria, and her great-grandson Ronin. Evelyn Damiano was preceded in death by her faithful husband James "Jay" Damiano Sr. 9 years and 22 minutes prior to her death.
A memorial service will be held on November 23, 2024 at 11:00am at the First United Methodist Church, 118 King Street. Friends and family are encouraged to attend and celebrate Evelyn's life and legacy. Food and drink will be provided immediately after the service in the fellowship hall.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Community Hospice, Heart at Home Senior Care, and Teresa Barlow for their compassionate care during her last few months. Evelyn Damiano will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
