He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph T. Zelenak Sr. and Ruth M. Zelenak; his son-in-law Adam Nouwen; and his brother-in-law Joseph Kovach. He is survived by: his wife Carol Deprey-Zelenak; his stepchildren, Bryan Timpano (Nicole), Kimberly Ozcan (Yucel), Ross Deprey (Heather) and Kelly Nouwen; his grandchildren, Selena, Savannah, Anthony, Dakota, Gemma and Mya; his brother-in-law Steven R. Molle; his nephews, Steven T. Molle and Scott Molle (Kathleen); and his niece Sheree Molle Bagensie.
