“Remembering Evalyn Coe Smith: Evalyn was a fearless badass of a woman. She was extremely bright and talented, but in high school always seemed discontented and a bit disengaged. It was hard for her to reconcile, I think, the ability she sensed that she had inside herself with the choices and expectations that society offered a woman at that point. My favorite photo was a kindergarten group in which "Coe" was dressed as a cowboy, with guns and boots, in a demure little Southern girl dress.”
