He is survived by: his wife Carole G. Schmitt; his sons, Joseph Jerome Schmitt, Jr. (Carmen), Jeffrey Scott Schmitt (Linda) and James Christopher Schmitt; his siblings, Col. Edward Schmitt and Veronica Phelabaum; his daughter-in-law Debbie; his grandchildren, Adrienne, Jana, Nicholas, Kayla and Marya; and his great grandchildren, Brandon, Kylie, Max, Mercer, Emery, Collins, Grayson, Oliver and Meyer.
