Donald Drummond Obituary

Donald M Drummond (Don) of Oldsmar, FL passed away November 29 at the Landmark of Countryside in Clearwater, FL. He was born near Metcalf, IL. He grew up there and near Chrisman, IL. He moved for high school to Warrensburg, IL. He was the only son of Newt and Leta Drummond and was born October 30, 1929. He was 92. For most of the summers in junior/high school he worked at his grandparents farm near Dana, IN. At 16, he drove a truck for Decatur Park and Rec transporting kids. He married Lora English on 7 June, 1952 and they raised their 3 daughters in Decatur and Normal IL. They were married for 63 years. She preceded him in death and left us September 7, 2015. Don missed her terribly. All of his sisters and brothers-in-law preceded him in death. Don served in the US Navy from 1952-1956, mainly stationed in Elizabeth City, NC. Don and Lora moved to Palm Harbor to be near their children and 5 grandchildren in 1999, later moving to East Lake Woodlands in Oldsmar in 2002. Don retired from Growmark, INC in 1992 as Senior VP of Finance. He did some consulting work through 1999 as a financial analyst. He also worked for Illinois Power and Hotpoint/GE prior to Growmark. He is survived by 3 daughters, Diane Bolton of Palm Harbor, Robin Maclennan of Oldsmar and Lynn Bowman of Cary, NC. Don also had sons-in-law, Don Maclennan of Palm Harbor and John Bowman of Cary, NC. He is leaving behind 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; John, Robert (Krystal), Christopher and Carly Maclennan and delightful great granddaughter Diana MacLennan, all of this area. Grandson Joshua Bowman (Annamayo) lives in Cary, NC. Don has a surviving cousin, Jackie Clevenger of Scottsburg, IN. She was like a sister to him since they were both only children and first cousins 9 months apart. He also has George Pinner, a cousin who lives in Forsyth, IL, He has some surviving nephews and nieces, Gail Alleman, Mt Zion, IL, Greg Smith and Duke Walden, Decatur, IL., Gary Williams, Rocky Mount, NC, and Ted Walden of Beeville, TX. Mary Teresa Knoblock of Oakland, WA. Jennifer Sublett of White Rock, NM was an unofficial adopted granddaughter.

He was a member of Northwood Presbysterian Church of Clearwater and previously First Presbysterian Church of Normal, IL. He also served as President of MARC, (McLean County Associated for Retarded Citizens) for two years and provided financial advise to them for many years. He also served as President of the Condo Association of Villas of Clearwater Beach for 2 years. He supported quite a few charities.

Don was a devoted husband, father and uncle. If Lora was happy, he was happy! He was extremely supportive of his daughters and grandkids, helping generously in any way he could. He was a patient father and as my best childhood friend recently advised me, I tried his patience but in the many hours she spent at our house, she never heard him raise his voice to his children. And I was the obedient daughter! He helped his nephews/nieces whenever they asked him for help. Don loved sports, particularly baseball. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan but also really enjoyed watching the Rays after moving to Florida. He also was a Bucs fan. He was an avid reader, he liked fiction. He read 2 books a week and after 85 listened to books on tape. Don was introverted and depended on our Mom alot for socializing. He was loved at Landmark because he was so kind and sweet. And very patient for an old man! He liked to tease and had a great sense of humor. My parents enjoyed the comics everyday. He really missed our Mom and we are glad they are together again.

We wish to thank the staff at the Landmark for all their devoted care.

In lieu of flowers, you may make memorial contributions to Northwood Presbyterian Church of Clearwater or the Alzheimer's Association.
