He was predeceased by: his parents, Garner Bates and Pearl Bates; his brother Tony Bates; his grandson Cory Smith; and his brother-in-law Tommy Sessions.
He is survived by: his wife Irma Joe Hunt Bates; his children, Sherry Barber (Roger), Shelia Adams (Stanley), Becky Courson (Hal) and Robbie Bates; his sister Charlotte Sessions; and his sister-in-law Dorene Bates. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.
