He is survived by: his wife Rebecca Grissom Van Ausdall; his children, Kathryn Van Ausdall and James Van Ausdall III (Heather); his grandson Thomas James Van Ausdall (T. J.); his brother Richard Van Ausdall (Virginia) of Williamsburg; and his half-siblings, Vi Bitwork (Terry) and Jack Van Ausdall (Janet).
