He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Haney Bates and Joseph Bates Jr.; and his sister Barbara Bates Kabat. He is survived by: his former wife Maria Henderson Bates of Satellite Beach, FL; his daughter Erin Bates; his grandson Cylas; his son Patrick Bates of Melbourne, FL; and his brothers, Tom Bates of Mobile, AL and Ed Bates of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Association or the American Heart Association in Jim's honor.
