He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Bates and Norma Kazee Bates; and his brother Greg Bates. He is survived by: his wife Conda Cook Bates of Melbourne; his daughters, Lauren (James Barker) of Garretts Fork, WV and Lanna Bates (Keith Jenkins) of Melbourne; his brother Jack; his sisters-in-law, Andi Bates of McConnell, WV and Drema Bates of Logan, WV; and his grandchildren, James Joseph Barker (J. J.), Reed Barker, Riley Barker and Lily Workman. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
