Arthur E. Neubauer Obituary
The Honorable Arthur E. Neubauer, a retired lawyer and administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration, died December 21 of natural causes at home in Marco Island.
Arthur Edsel Neubauer was born on October 31, 1924 to Arthur and Margaret (Whalen) Neubauer in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of five children. He attended North High School before taking a job at the Washington Navy Yard in D.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served four years, mostly in the South Pacific.
Mr. Neubauer attended the University of Miami completing a joint degree with the law school there. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated in 1950 with his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree
He began his professional career as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York City after graduating from the FBI Academy. From there he moved into labor relations law, taking a position with the National Labor Relations Board. He subsequently moved to the Social Security Administration as an administrative law judge for over 35 years, first in Albany, New York and then in Roanoke, Virginia.
Mr. Neubauer was a member of the New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and Florida Bar Associations, as well as the Association of Federal Judges.
After retiring, he opened his own law practice in Roanoke - helping hundreds of Southwest Virginia residents rightfully receive their Social Security disability benefits.
Arthur met the love of his life, Jerlene Jones, while living in the Albany area. They were together for 40 years. Both enjoyed traveling and visited Paris, Rome, Spain, Ireland, and Mexico among other places. Since retiring, they have enjoyed spending summers in Santa Fe, New Mexico and winters in Marco Island.
Mr. Neubauer was an avid recreational tennis player who enjoyed a match or two while visiting his children and grandchildren in California, Illinois, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. His primary avocation, however, was reading the New York Times. He read it every day and viewed it as a form of lifelong education.
In addition to his wife, Jerlene, he is survived by three daughters, Margaret Moore of Roanoke; Anne Knowler of Bel Air, Maryland; and Lili Schroppe of Ridgefield, Connecticut. A son, Peter O. Neubauer of Libertyville, Illinois; pre-deceased him.
