He was predeceased by: his parents, James "Jim" Isaac Surles and Rochelle Montford Surles; his siblings, Thomas, Glen Surles, Evelyn Swift and Betty Sands; and his great grandchild Landon Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Lou Surles; his children, Robert "Bobby" M. Surles, Jr. (Karen), Kathy Smith (Randy) and Gary Surles; and his grandchildren, Jennifer Raines (Michael), Ashley Butler, Chad Smith (Ansley) and Justin Surles (Nicole). He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
