He was predeceased by: his parents, Edna Rivers and Roland Rivers of Lloyd, Florida.; his son Peter Rivers; and his grandson Joseph S. Rivers. He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Roberts; his sister Mary Edna Rivers; his children, John Rivers, Cassandra Rivers and Yolanda Rivers-Edwards; the mother of his children Dorothy M. Rivers; his grandchildren, Derek W. Edwards, II, Bryant A. Edwards, Kristina A. Edwards, Joshua P. Rivers and Isaac B. Rivers; and also, Derek W. Edwards and Mary Jackson. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in the name of Samson Rivers to his favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
