He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer James and Minnie Briese James; his former wife Ramona Rohr James; his daughter Cathy James Kelley; and his siblings, Eldon James, Delmer James (Betty) and Verna James Donner (Rudy).

He is survived by: his wife Pearl James; his siblings, Lowell James (Shirley) and Marlyce Harlan (Jim); his sister-in-law Barb James; his children, Sherry Eichholz (Rick), Kevin James (Beth) and Brad James (Renee); his son-in-law Brian Kelley; and his grandchildren, Rachel, Esther, Uriah, Jeremy, Ben, Abby, Gabriella, Stephen, Zechariah, Micaiah and Ramona. He is also survived by his 12 great-grandchildren.
