He was predeceased by: his wife Elaine Matheny; his parents, Thomas Max Matheny and Sara "Sadie" Towery Matheny; his brother Thomas "Tommy" Alton Matheny; and his grandparents, Forest, Esther Matheny, William M. and Sarah Lou Towery.

He is survived by: his brother William Mark Matheny of Gaffney.
