He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Glen Gates and Lela Gates; his wife Janet Sayre-Gates; his children, Vicki Kirby (Danny) of Lake Mary, FL and Jon Gates of Warner Robins, GA; and his grandchildren, Tyler Kirby of Washington, DC and Kharsten Gates of Perry, GA..
