He is survived by: his wife Melba Bourgeois Benson; his children, John Jr. (Barbara Wylie), Charles and Kristine; his grandchildren, Michael, Jeanne, Chelsye and Christian; his great grandchildren, Brittney, Michael, Samantha, Tristan, Bradley, Mose, Jocelyn and Ruth; his great great grandchildren, Mia and Brooklyn; and his sister Sonja Bjerg.
