He was predeceased by: his father Joseph E. Taylor Sr.; and his brother Edward Lee Taylor. He is survived by: his mother Hilda Reece Taylor; his wife Elizabeth B. Taylor of Jasper; his children, Gretchen Purvis (late Payton Purvis) of Watkinsville and Dan Taylor (Holly) of Macon; his grandchildren, Emma Fordham, Chase Whitehorn, Ellie Grace Taylor, Annabelle Taylor, Hayley Taylor, Addy Purvis and Payton Purvis; and his siblings, Joseph E. Taylor Jr. (Jacque Stokes Taylor), Pam Taylor Cook and Brett Allen Taylor. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

While he happily donated both time and money to many civic causes, he was most passionate about youth sports in Hamilton County and their impact on young people.
