He was predeceased by: his parents, James Blount and Reatha Mae Blount; and his sisters, Patricia "Evelyn" Hilson and Marcia Wilson. He is survived by: his wife Mae Blount; his sons, James Blount, Jr. (Brenda), Benjamin Blount (Rachel), Cedric Blount of James and Everette Blount; his siblings, Sylvia Wanda Brown, Janice Sewell (Bobby), Eugene Blount (Tracy), Thelma Blount-Fox (Marvin), Timothy Blount, Joseph Blount, Brendan Blount (Tiffany) and Jim Blount; and his aunt Juanita Gaulden. He is also survived by uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
