He was predeceased by: his parents, Araminta "Nikki" Smith and Richard Lee "Dick" Smith. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Nelson Smith; his son David Wayne Smith Jr. (Claire); his stepdaughter Christine Slaughter (Tom Burnett); his grandchildren, Morgan, Scout, Olivia, David "Wayne" III, Grant and Naomi; and his sister Gwen Eda Smith Shields.
