He was predeceased by: his parents, Orville Fulton Chewning and Marie Smith Chewning; his wife Linda Chewning; and his siblings, Marvin, Nuggie Chewning and Joan Moody.

He is survived by: his children, Howard Chewning (Paula), Ellen Miller, Melissa McGinley (Carlton), Robert Dykes (Leslie), Laura Colson (Ronnie Fowler) and Rachel Paul; and his brother Pee Wee Chewning. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 28th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Peeples (14165 N Main St, Jacksonville, FL 32218). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 28th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
