He was predeceased by: his parents, John Flanagan and Marie Flanagan (Liggett); and his wife Janice Marie Flanagan. He is survived by: his children, Walter Flanagan Jr., Cathy Covel (Bob), Lynne Nalley (Allen) and Dianne Wagner (John); his grandchildren, Colette Hendren (John), Crystal Murphy (Kevin), Bobby Covel IV, Chelsea Mudiappa (Keith), Walter Flanagan III, Shelbi Flanagan, Dr. Brittany Newton (Rhett), Dr. Alicia Willett (Austin) and Miranda Nalley; his great grandchildren, Jade, Kylie of Makenzie, JT, Finley, Izzy, Blake and Riley; his sisters, Barbara Coffey and Marilyn Flanagan; and his caregivers, Karima Rezgui and Ann Lacuaren. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
