He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward J. Farrell and Barbara Farrell (Exner); his brothers, Richard and Paul Farrell; his brothers-in-law, Jeffery M. Smith and Scott Ellarson; and his daughter-in-law Tina Marie Kolewe.

He is survived by: his wife Leanna Smith Farrell; his children, John Farrell Jr., Jeanne Farrell Smith (Luke), James Farrell (Andrea Massey), Dietrich Kolewe, Deland Kolewe and Jennifer Kolewe (Kevin Harris); his siblings, Edward Jr. (Ruth), Robert (Diane), Mark (Barbara) and Barbara Lynn Farrell Fitzpatrick (Joseph); and his sisters-in-law, Helen Farrell, Sandra Ellarson and Pamela Smith. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends.
