He was predeceased by: his parents, Oliver Eugene Smith and Georgia May Norris; his brother George Oliver Smith; and his son Danny Lamar Mathis, Sr.. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Smith; his sister Alice Hygema; and his sons, Joel Mathis, Sr. and Scott Mathis. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
