He was predeceased by: his wife Inge; and his parents, Jose and Ruth. He is survived by: his children, Christopher and Stephanie (Chris G.); and his brothers, Hamilton (Cathy) and Franklyn (Lauren).

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the US Soccer Foundation. The US Soccer Foundation uses soccer as a tool for social change, providing opportunities for underserved youth to play, learn, and grow both on and off the field, which was a cause dear to Jose's heart.

Pat Armstrong wrote a sympathy message

“Doris and I send our deepest sympathies. We have missed our dear friend José over the years, and now will never again enjoy his company and good spirit. What a tremendous loss for the family and for us all. To Christopher and Stephanie, we wish you strength and comfort through the many good memories of both your mother and father.
