He was predeceased by: his sons, John and Gerard; his grandchildren, Mattie Aiello and Ricky Nickels; and his brothers, Tom and Jim.
He is survived by: his wife Mary A. (Mac); his children, Richard (Barbara), Paul (Colleen Croniger), Carl III (Pam), Christopher (Jackie) and Caroline Nickels; his stepchildren, Ginny Barkman (late Bob), Sheila Timony, Michael (Amy), Maureen Timony (Patrick Conroy) and Molly Tomony (Jim); and his brother Fred Nickels.
