He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond David and Nellie DeYoung Merrill; his wives, Frances Bowden Merrill of Virginia and Berdina Merrill; and his children, Larry Merrill, David Lee Merrill and Donna Lynn Merrill.
He is survived by: his sons, Raymond Gabriel Merrill, Jr. (Sharon) and Richard Merrill. He is also survived by four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
