He was predeceased by: his son James S. Skillman Jr.; his sister Maria E. Kovach; and his parents, James L. Skillman and Celia H. Skillman (Galeski). He is survived by: his wife Charlotte F. (Vandegrift); his daughters, Laura M Skillman, Donna L Skillman (Arthur) and Eccleston; his granddaughters, Talia A Skillman-Eccleston and Lydia G. Skillman-Eccleston; his sister Sally (Robert Traegler); and his brother-in-law Dennis Kovach.
