He was predeceased by: his parents, Josephine Santarella and Carmine Santarella; his former wife Marie; and his son Mark. He is survived by: his wife Mona; his sons, Joseph M. Santarella Jr. (Susan Eckert) and Christopher J. Santarella (Gabriele); his sister Linda Smith (Al); and his granddaughters, Marisa Santarella (Diego Horna) and Elena Santarella.
