Sandra Kay Stewart-Miller, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on May 1, 2024, at her home in north DeLand. She was born in Uniontown, PA, to Mildred and Whitford Nycum. Sandra's life was a testament to love, faith, and compassion.
Sandy's most cherished accomplishment was her son, Donald B. Dempsey, Jr. She adored Donald and moved to Florida from Pennsylvania in the 90s to be near him and her grandson, Michael. A devout follower of Jesus, Sandra found immense joy in sharing the gospel with others. She had a deep love for animals, especially her precious cats Walter and Rusty. She was preceded in death by her husband Emery Stewart in 2019 and found love again with long-time friend Thomas Miller.
In addition to her husband, Sandra is survived by her son Donald Dempsey, Jr., daughter-in-law Angela Dempsey, grandchildren Michael (Lauren), Grayson, and Elizabeth Dempsey, siblings Shirley Arlene Storch, Bill Nycum, and Kenneth Nycum, and great grandchild Isla, step-children Nancy, Robbie, and Rickey Stewart, and niece, Susan Bealko and nephew, Andy Bealko.
She is also preceded in death by her brother, George Nycum and niece, Melanie Nycum.
Sandra's favorite activities included sharing the gospel, rescuing stray animals, and proudly boasting about her son and daughter-in-law to anyone who would listen. Her warm spirit and love for life touched the hearts of all who knew her. Her favorite phrase, "It's a child, not a choice," exemplified her unwavering belief in the sanctity of life.
She was a staunch advocate for Grace House in DeLand and the impactful work they do in the community.
A memorial service to celebrate Sandra's life will be held at Alliance Chapel, 600 S Florida Ave, DeLand, FL, on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 2 pm, with burial to follow at Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand, FL.
