With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of Dorothy S Bender (Deland, Florida), born in Lake Helen, Florida, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on February 28, 2025 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by: her parents, Reverend James Andrew Smith and Mattie Grimes Smith; her husband James A. Bender; her siblings, James, Thelma, David, Johnnie, Isaac, Queen, Jethro and Sarah; her sons, Caesar J. Frazier and Jeffrey A. Bender (Gloria); and her brother Leroy Smith (Ruthye) of Titusville, Florida..
She is survived by: her grandchildren, Sheri Jackson, Maurice Frazier (Gina) of St. Louis, April Johnson (Eric) of Aurora and Dianca McCary (Woodrow) of Jacksonville, Florida.. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins.
Visitation was held on Friday, March 7th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the J. E. Cusack Mortuary (727 S Stone St, DeLand, FL 32720). A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 8th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church (710 W Cincinnati Ave, DeLand, FL 32720).
Dorothy graduated from Euclid School and made significant contributions to education in Volusia County.
