He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas and Sarah (Campbell); his son John Charles; his brothers, Henry, Thomas and Dan Willie; and his siblings-in-law, John Nearing Sr., Violet, Alice and Shirley.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Murphy; his daughter Charlene; his granddaughters, Jennifer and Danielle; his sisters, Mary, Ethel Nearing and Glace Bay; his stepchildren, Malcolm, Greg Gillis and Paula; his stepgrandchildren, Ryan and Haley; and his cousin Lily Lyons. He is also survived by five nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Palliative Care, St. Paul's Church Building Fund or charity of choice.
