He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerhard Paefgen and Maria Paefgen; his sister Marianne Laacks (late Irmgard Paegen); and his wife Irmgard Paegen. He is survived by: his daughter Doris Krzykwa; his close friend Ellie Mero; his granddaughter Julie Krzykwa; and his niece Kirsten Flegel (Todd).
