He was predeceased by: his children, Ken Spates and Pamela Spates. He is survived by: his wife Mary Lou Spates; his children, Steven Spates, David Spates and Judith Lancey; and his stepchildren, Lee Jenkins, Barbara Gonzalez (Jenkins) and Robin Parker (Jenkins). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Legacy House in his memory.
