He is survived by: his son Richard Ervin Gates, Jr.; his siblings, James Russell, Robert Perry, Jr., David Michael Gates and Mary Sue Gates Jowers; his wife Ina Wright Gates; his children, Marian Renee McClure (Allen) and James Michael Gates (Lisa) of Norfolk, VA; his grandchildren, Jacob (Sydnie), Jonathan, Jaydon McClure, Jessica and Sarah Gates; and his sister-in-law Elizabeth Mitchell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, numerous extended family members, and friends.
