He was predeceased by: his parents, William Matthews of Washington and Vergie Mae Matthews; his brothers, Richard Alvin and William; and his daughter-in-law Sandy.

He is survived by: his brother Felton Matthews (Nitza); his close friend Ollie Sullivan; his children, Timothy Lee Matthews and Lisa Anne Sweat (Kenny); and his granddaughters, Madison, Savannah and Mallory. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.
