He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, George Bates and Freda Bates; his former wife Anita Bates; his sister Ruth Peterson; his nephew Eric Bates; his wife Susan Funkhouser Bates; his daughter Cheryl (John); his grandchildren, Lindsay (Victor), Noah (Jenn), Daniel (Lauren), Kelly, Alicia (Rob), Brian, Melanie and Timothy; his great grandchildren, Elijah, Ella, Emily, Abby, Everett, Alaina and Logan; his grandchildren, Shawn (Huiyan), Amy and Keila; his great grandchild Luna; his brothers, David Bates (Charm) and George Bates (Carol); and his sister-in-law Prudence Dancy.
