He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Charles Drinkwater and Adeline Drinkwater; his wife Robin Fantazzo; his brothers, Charles "Drinks", Philip (Suzanne) and Donald; and his daughter Michele (Adam). He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.

In January of 2020, Mike was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, which he battled bravely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, which supports police and fire departments throughout the nation by providing service dogs/K-9 unit grants and the Make-A-Wish organization.
