He was predeceased by: his friend Daniel J. Cunningham; and his pet Colby. He is survived by: his sister Danielle G. Van Ess (Chad); his wife Cara Gibbs (Long); his parents, Richard (Yvonne) and Cory (Tom); his uncle Terilyn (Teri); and also, Jeff Magner, Stefanie, Chloe, Kyle, Randall (Randy), Gail Gibbs, Cameron and Ainsley. He is also survived by spouses and children; uncle.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the precise cause of death remains unknown at this time.
Derek would be honored by a donation in his name to DifferentBrains.org, a charitable organization dedicated to neurodiversity advocacy.
