He was predeceased by: his wife Catherine Gilbert; and his siblings, Burl Gilbert, Gaynell Howell, Violet Combs, Lorraine Crutchfield and Sharon Peacher.

He is survived by: his son Wade (Linda Gilbert) of Ennice, NC; his grandson Glenn (Kim Gilbert); his great grandchild Ashleigh Gilbert of Mt. Airy, NC; and his sisters, Phyllis Keene of Romney, WV, Faye (Carl Crawford) and Charlotte Lewis of Manassas, VA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
