He was loved and cherished by many people including : his children, Jeff, Laurie, Susan, Beth and Brett; his father Laurie; his wife Irene; his former life partner Nancy; his grandchildren, Callista Mueller, Kailey Mueller, Matthew Potter, Kevin Potter, Nick Boyer, Joshua Kendrick, Lauren Kendrick, Ashley Kendrick, Heidi Mueller and Kyle Mueller; his stepchildren, Janelle Shives (Jason) and Lance Moorhead; and his stepgranddaughters, Josephine Shives, Jenna Shives and Jessica Shives.

In 1994, while playing in a charity doubles tournament at the Orlando Racquet Club, Don met Irene Moorhead, and they struck up a conversation.
