He was predeceased by: his wife Kathryn E.; and his son James M. Helmke. He is survived by: his sister Ruth Scheeler of Houston, TX; and his daughters, Mary Ellen Evard (Erv) of Ft. Wayne, IN and Dianna K. Helmke of Wimauma, FL. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great-grandchildren.
