Joseph August Obituary
Joseph A. Mazzaferro, of Newark, DE passed away on September 25, 2018 at Seasons Hospice in Christiana Hospital after a long and courageous battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme. He was 57 years old.
Joe (as he liked to be called) was born in Chester, PA to Ida (Capato) and Louis D. Mazzaferro. The fourth of five children, he is survived by siblings Louis Mazzaferro, Deborah Geddis, & Joanne Mazzaferro (Andre LeClerc). Joe is also survived by his only child, Shyla Lyons (Raymond) and four grandchildren; Gianna, Gage, Colton, and Jase. Joseph was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Mazzaferro. The family sincerely thanks Joe's former spouse, Robin Mazzaferro, and his dear friend Kathy Sullivan, for all the love, comfort, & support they offered Joe throughout his illness.
Joe graduated from Delcastle HS in 1979. He eventually went on to establish his own business, Diamond State Truck Lines, and was a franchisee of JRC Transportation Inc in Williamsburg, VA. Joe was passionate about fundraising and bringing awareness to Breast Cancer through the non-profit, "Beyond Boobs!". He was known for his custom-designed Peterbilt tractor-trailer that he dubbed "Ma'am-O-Gram" that spread Breast Cancer Awareness all around the country.
Joe was known for his infectious smile and his huge heart, and never met a stranger. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a zest for life that had a magnetic effect on all who met him. Prior to his illness, Joe loved to ride his beloved Harley Davidson he named "Eleanor". He enjoyed spending time with friends and listening to live music and was enthusiastic guitar player. Joe loved his family dearly and was very passionate about the holidays and the importance of spending time with his grandchildren, whom knew him as "Grandpa Joe". Joe was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees fan and loved to fish off the coast of Key West.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Beyond Boobs or the Biden Cancer Initiative in Joe's memory.
A memorial service and celebration of Joe's life will be held on Sunday, October 7th, 2018 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St. Smyrna, DE 19977 from 11 AM to 1 PM, with a small luncheon immediately following.
