He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Scharnagle and Merrill Scharnagle. He is survived by: his wife Catherine Elizabeth Scharnagle; his children, Linda Yates and Charles William Scharnagle III; and his sister Merrill Brophy. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
