He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry T. Kates and Attie McKnatt Kates; his wife Doris Williamson Kates; his children, Faye Kates Moore, Linda Kates Barlow and Roger William Kates; and his siblings, Leon Kates, Benjamin Kates, Thelma Porter, Hoarce Kates and Imogene Jordan.
He is survived by: his daughters, Connie Thompson (Ed) and Ruth Peterman (Gary); his grandchildren, Steve, Tim Gray, Kyle Peterman, David, Jason and Melissa Moore; and his great grandchildren, Rosalynn, Zoey Gray, Aubrey, Bristol Moore, Jason Jr., Chase Moore, Raelynn and Jameson Peterman.
